TRAVELS AND TRIBULATIONS # 332

May 15, 2022

This morning we walked to the Church of Santa Maria Formosa.  The National Geographic Walking Venice described it as a church erected in the early 16th century on the remains of an earlier church that had burned to the ground.  In addition, “the shrine derives its odd name – formosa (which means ‘buxom’ in Italian) from a seventh-century Venetian bishop who claimed visions of a well-endowed Virgin Mary.”

Well, I don’t know what he saw, but when we got to the site, all we saw was fencing and locks and yellow signs warning of danger and saying, if our interpretation is correct, this building is not safe.  Shame on National Geographic for leading us astray (and the book is only 5 years old).  And we couldn’t get close enough to take any pictures of the unusual tower that dominated one corner of the building.

So we took a couple of other pictures and headed back, stopping at the CoOp for a few groceries, and a few items for lunch – mashed potatoes rolled into small logs and covered with a breaded topping, spicy rice balls filled with cheese and covered with a breaded topping, and a Russian salad Mike and Matt and I used to eat in Samara (vegetables cut into small pieces and held together by a mayonnaise dressing.  We stopped in another store and Bonnie got two ham sandwiches topped with cheese (which had pistachio nuts in the cheese).  And home we went.

Oh, somewhere in all of the back and forthing, to-ing and fro-ing we mailed a postcard Bonnie bought yesterday.  Here’s hoping it beats us to Georgia.

That’s pretty much it from my side.  Supper in a couple of hours and then Mom will give her insights into today’s doings and non-doings.

I forgot.  We played a game of Rummy after lunch and I caught Mom at 470-465.  My lead did not last long.  One hand actually with her winning 545 to 510.  Total games now 2-3.  She has the 3.

For all of you chocolate lovers, we pass a store whose windows feature some good looking goodies.  We will have a sample soon and let you know.

And for you architects and lovers of old buildings, two more views:

Later.

Love,

Dad/Pappy/David

Hey, everybody.  Good night’s sleep last night. Didn’t get up till 6:30. He got up just after me. He did some computer stuff, read notes from Luke and Amy. Then, I made him some eggs, toast and pancetta. I had some juice and toast. Then, he was off to take a shower. I went into take my “bath” in the sink. We got our clothes on and loaded up for the day. I had the grocery list and he had the turtle bag in case we found the coop open.

Well, we are in for tonight and have turned on TV and are watching an episode of NCIS. I will type while I watch.

The walk this morning was nice. First walking 10 minutes in the wrong direction. Then, turning around and proceeding in the right direction. Passed a lot of the same stores from earlier days. Most were closed near by but as you walked farther the traffic picked up and more tourists. There were  more open stores. We looked around for a while walking farther down the path just to look. We saw one café with a line out the door. There was small pizzas and croissants.  We looked but didn’t stop. We passed the farmacia that was closed today.

We finally turned around and headed home. The coop had been open when we passed it earlier so we were going to stop. We needed more water, coke, butter, eggs and potato chips. I wanted some sweet rolls but couldn’t find anything that looked good. Maybe one morning we will go out for breakfast.

After procuring our supplies and I got my mini ham and cheese sandwiches, we headed home for lunch. I warmed up some of his purchases from the store and warmed my sandwiches. Some water and some chips were added to our lunch. Chocolate squares for dessert. Then, it was nap time. It was 1:30 and I managed to sleep till 3:30.

After naptime he worked on the computer and I did dot to dot puzzles. Then, I got my chance at the computer and my yahoo. I was reading comics from the last 3 weeks. Then, I sent a note to Karen. He took another nap while I worked on the computer.

By then, it was after 6 and time to go to supper. So we walked out and found a table. He had a chicken with potatoes covered in mushroom gravy. He said it was very good. I wasn’t very hungry so I had a plate of bruchetta. The tomatoes over here are so good. I could sit down and eat a whole bowl with just some salt.  They had some different packs of bread sticks that had gorgeous paintings on the packages. I brought two home for the pictures. After supper we walked down to the canal. It is the path we will use next Sunday to go to the airport and get covid tests. We walked a while then came back to the room. Now in our pjs. I am typing and he is on his phone while we watch NCIS. I need to get a bag of garbage ready for tomorrow morning. Need to get it out by 8 am.

Well, time for some coke and some more puzzles. We are some wild and crazy guys.

When is the last day of school in Columbia county? I don’t remember. Congratulations to Emma who graduates from 8th grade tomorrow. Whoopie!!!

Love you all. Miss you.  Mom, Granny and Bonnie
